One month from today…All Aboard!
JULY 28, 2013
A month from today, my husband and I will travel to Pointe Noir, Congo to join Mercy Ships on its first mission to that country. I learned more about Mercy Ships in April 2013 at an event in Dallas, and I decided that it was time for us to return to Africa, to help in any way the people of Mercy Ships who give their lives to the hope and healing of others. The "forgotten poor" is how president and founder of Mercy Ships, Don Stephens, describes the patients they see in West Africa, many of whom never have had access to any medical care. On my few trips to Africa, I've felt tugs at my heart that are hard to describe, and I am due for another trip. Everyone needs to round out their sharp edges once in a while, and I'm certainly no exception. I also find that trips like this can help give me Perspsective - with a capital P. All of us complain about trivial things - that's normal. But sometimes when I hear myself and little complaints, I'm reminded that actually I have very little to complain about.
There's another reason that Peter and I wanted to do this trip together - as a married couple about to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary, we've realized that we become closer if we're working together on a project that helps others. We aren't the first couple to realize this, and we've been inspired by the stories of others, including those on Mercy Ships, who not only work on the ship but also found love and started families on it, too.
I hope that you'll follow the trip and share it with others. Not everyone can take a trip like this, so I hope to make it a virtual mission trip experience.
